The Brief

Teaming up with Hearst Live once again, we were tasked with providing full production to support Esquire magazine’s annual Townhouse.

Working closely with the designers at Hearst, we helped to visualise their ideas and bring the event to life. Their ‘all in this together’ attitude helped create a fantastic event and it was great to work with the Hearst team once again.

The event encompassed content from Esquire sponsors, including fashion edits, a concierge service, barber shop and film screening. On Event Production Co. were tasked with building different sponsor areas for each of these sessions as well as covering the entire house in Esquire branding.

We provided full fabrication, installation, lighting, AV and production for the event, which ran for four days at Carlton House Terrace in Pall Mall, London.

The challenges we faced

Transforming a Grade 1 Listed building with minimal disruption was a first.

The listing meant that we couldn’t permanently fix anything to the walls, so everything needed to be freestanding.

As the event was being held over four days, we had to ensure that everything was going to remain firmly in place during the event but could be easily removed when needed, leaving no trace.

Using freestanding scenery, furniture and non-permanent adhesive tape to fix the branding, we ensured everything stayed put whilst being sympathetic to the building and not causing any damage when being removed afterwards.

Another thing we needed to consider was the tight schedule. The event installation was pretty intense so we had to use unused rooms to store our tools and equipment, before moving them out into another room when the previous room needed to be used.

All elements were built from scratch and installed the day before the event. The team worked on-site from midday till 2am.

What we did

Step One

We covered the entire venue in Esquire branding. This included covering over 100 pieces of Carlton House Terrace artwork, across 14 different rooms. We measured and coded every single piece of artwork and photo frame, so each item that needed covering had a unique code, making installation simple.

Step Two

We built a room within a room for a pop-up barber shop. The shop had concrete walls, a separate floor, units with mirrors and authentic barber shop chairs.

Step Three

For a Harvey Nichols styling service, we re-carpeted the entire room as well as installing free-standing walls and a 12ft drape.

Step Four

We helped Clarks to display their new range of desert boots with plinths and LED lighting.

Step Five

Three bars were built across the entire house. We also installed two stages for presentation purposes.

Jess Young, Hearst Events Manager said: “A huge thank you for all your hard work on The Esquire Townhouse project! We were really impressed with the quality of finish on all elements.

The On team seamlessly installed and de-rigged what was a beast of a project. The venue particularly noticed the care and attention given to the venue. And the AV team on site were also fantastic.”
